Luther Raymond Mullins passed away on Wednesday morning, April 12, 2017, at the age of 82, at his home in Mount Vernon surrounded by his family. He had fought a courageous battle with cancer. He is now in the arms of his loving Lord and will be greatly missed by all who love him. Luther was a good man: kind, generous, and loving. He loved singing in the church choir (occasionally writing hymns), and studying the Bible with friends. Luther was born the fifth child of Willard and Erma (Ellison) Mullins in Pound, Virginia on August 30, 1934. At the age of 12, his family relocated to the west coast with his mother and five siblings. After high school he was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad, then drafted in his early 20s into the US Army, where he served for two years before returning to BNR. He eventually entered the grocery business where he worked his way up to management. He enjoyed a long career in a well-respected position in the corporate office at Thrifty Foods. Luther and Shirley were married September 8, 1990, and enjoyed more than 26 years together, especially camping and fishing at Ross Lake. Their blended family grew to seven children, sixteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. The creative man, Luther taught himself how to play the guitar and banjo. He also designed and built a boat. He believed that the songs that he wrote came from God who gave him the words and music. He enjoyed time spent with family, fishing, gardening, tending to his apple orchards reading his Bible, singing in his church choir, and camping. Luther is survived by his wife Shirley, his children: Michael Mullins, Cathy Wahlin (Dave), Lori Van Brenk (Bryan); Luther was very proud of his three children, Mike, Cathy and Lori and considered them a blessing. He also had a special love for his step-children Vicki Lewis, Susan Kutchick (Gary), Robert Exelby (Karmella), Joan Sarchett (Rick). Surviving him are sisters, Joyce Hinson and Janie Moore and brother, Walter Mullins (Dorothy); brother-in-law Bud Trownsell (Nancy); sister-in-law Pauline Mullins, and several nieces and nephews. Gone before him are his mother and father, sister, Eleanor and brother Charles; brothers-in-law Darrell Collins, Patrick Moore and Carl Hinson. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 2 PM at Bethany Covenant Church. 1318 South 18th Street, Mount Vernon. After the service his urn will be placed at the Fir-Conway Lutheran Cemetery by his family. Memorials may be made to Bethany Covenant Church benevolent fund or Hospice of the Northwest , 227 Freeway Dr. Suite A, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.
