Phyllis V. Rindal Benson, 92, a long time Mount Vernon resident went home to be with the Lord on June 8, 2017 surrounded by her family. She and her twin brother, Floyd, were born in Bottineau, North Dakota on July 31, 1924 to Frank Erickson and Edna Smulan Erickson. In 1932 the family moved to Mount Vernon to be close to their extended family. Her mother died in 1933 when she was 9 and she gained additional responsibilities during her last three years in high school when, during WWII, her father was conscripted in 1941to build ships in Bremerton.

She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1943 and in December 1943 married Arne Rindal. They lived on a small farm in Conway across the road from where he grew up. There they raised their four children, Kathleen, Steven, Jeffrey and Duane.

She was mostly a stay at home mom while raising her children, but after Arne died in 1970 she worked at Conway Grade School, Montgomery Ward and Visiting Nurses. Her main pursuit, however, was loving, enjoying and praying for her grandchildren. She was very involved in their lives and was a very positive example to them all. In 1990 she married Ted Benson and her family expanded. They were married for nearly 20 years.

She loved to travel and was always ready to go to her grandchildren’s events, graduations and weddings wherever they might be. She traveled to the Holy Land and Egypt with her brother Floyd, went on a tour of Norway, enjoyed an Alaskan cruise with Ted, spent many wonderful vacations at Sunriver with Steven, Dorothy, their family and friends, and went to New York and Washington D.C. with Jeff and Teresa to name a few. She even went to Montana and shot an antelope with Steven as her guide.

She filled her time writing letters, working on family picture albums and reading. She loved a good book, especially biographies of people of faith and always the Bible.

Phyllis was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for over 60 years and faithfully served teaching Sunday school, working in VBS, Awana, Child Evangelism, Missionary Fellowship and as a deaconess for many years. She was part of a Birthday Group of friends from Emmanuel that have met once a month for over 50 years. Phyllis had a heart for international missions and lived a life of generosity, compassion and faith. She walked closely with God through good times and tough times and will be remembered for her desire to pray for those in need and to share her love of the Lord with others.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Arne Rindal and Ted Benson, her brother Floyd, her son Duane, and stepdaughter Annette Teeter.

She is survived by her children, Kathleen Ellingsen, Dr. Steven Rindal and wife Dorothy, Dr. Jeff Rindal and wife Teresa and daughter-in-law Kimmie Rindal; stepchildren, Arlene Moore and husband Gary, Andrea Guy and husband Rob; sisters-in-law Christine Dorsey and Arlene Rindal; 16 grandchildren, 8 stepgrandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren. Phyllis was happiest when spending time with her children and their families.
