Betty was born February 7, 1922, in Mount Vernon, WA. Her parents, Irving Eliott Lloyd, MD and Jane Clark Meyer Lloyd, arrived in Mount Vernon in 1919. Her parents had grown up in the Tumwater and Delphi areas near Olympia. Betty, a life-long resident of Mount Vernon, graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1939. She married Lloyd G. Smaby in 1942 and graduated from the University of Washington School of Nursing with a BS in Nursing in 1944. Betty wrote, “I belonged to the Cadet Nurse Corp. After that I then worked as Surgery Charge at Rowley Hospital in Mount Vernon with my Dad and his friends. A wonderful time.” During World War II she followed Lloyd, a Staff Sgt. in the Army to Officer Candidate School in New Orleans, working in the First Aid Station at the Shipyards and to Norfolk, VA where she worked at Norfolk General Hospital. After the War Betty and Lloyd opened Hilltop Fountain and Sundries on North 4th Street. Later Lloyd became a jeweler in downtown Mount Vernon. Betty worked for the Stollwerck Clinic in Burlington, the Berhns Clinic in Mount Vernon, and then for more than 30 years with Dr. Maynard Johnson at the Boynton Clinic which became the Skagit Valley Medical Center and is now Skagit Regional Clinics. Betty loved nursing, people, gardening, sewing, reading, the beach, her dogs, especially Beau, Tucker and Woodie, and being a grandmother. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter H and a life long member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she served as a Stephen’s Minister, on the vestry, the altar guild and Care Team. She and Lloyd enjoyed boating and skiing. They often took groups of kids on camping and skiing trips. Betty is survived by her sister, Janet Stein; daughter Vicki Wesen; daughter-in-law Jean Ireton; grandson Brian Wesen; granddaughter and husband, Marca and Ashely Bondurant; great grandsons Evan Philip Bondurant and Kiran Weldon Bondurant; and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Richard Lloyd and sister-in-law Lolly, her sister Nettie Hastings and her brother-in-law Larry, her brother-in law Robert Stein, her husband Lloyd, her son Mark H. Smaby, her son-in-law Donald P. Wesen and her dear friend, Harriett Davis. We are grateful to Rosie Hulbert for her friendship and care of Bet and to Hospice of the Northwest for their wisdom and support. Betty suggested that memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 415 S. 18th, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. A Memorial Service followed by a lunch reception will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 415 S. 18th, Mount Vernon, WA, Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 11:30 am. The Rev. Helen McPeak will preside.
